Drum and bass megastar Andy C plays Metropolis: club review

Written by  Zoe Wilson

Saturday night in Leeds saw a return to its roots for Metropolis, as it hosted its first pure drum and bass event in over five years at Stylus, one of the premier venues in Leeds for nights such as this. The line up included heavyweights of the scene Andy C and DJ Hype who both delivered the goods in worldclass style as usual. Stylus was the first venue in the country to have a new L’acoustics Kara sound system installed last summer and it sounded incredible – so crisp and clear, with tonnes of bass.

Andy C in particular absolutely smashed it, playing the best set I’ve ever seen him play. This was the first time that his new 'Andy C Alive' live show has visited Leeds, and it’s definitely worth checking out if it comes to your city any time soon. He is an absolute wizard behind the decks, with impeccable timing, great tune selection and more double drops than you can shake your hat at. At one point, he even managed to blow the power up on stage – his beats were just too powerful for it to handle!

Warming up for Andy C was Dub Phizix, who played a banging set full of bass-rumbling deep rolling tunes  – I sometimes find him a bit minimal for my liking, but on the incredible sound system in Stylus he sounded absolutely awesome. After Andy C we got to enjoy the sounds of a local boy, Steppa – who definitely had the hardest challenge of the night playing after such a legend whilst also warming up for Hype. Despite facing such a challenge, he held his own and played a storming set.

DJ Hype’s set was more dancefloor oriented dnb than I’ve seen him play at his Playaz night, which errs towards jump up heavy, but it was still a really good set and followed on from the other sets of the night really well. The dancefloor was still packed and jumping at the very end of the night, which is always a good sign.

Overall, it was a fantastic event, and one of the most enjoyable I’ve been to in ages. Massive respect to the guys over at Metropolis for delivering yet another massive night – the venue is one of my favourite in the country, the music was incredible and the atmosphere was good from start to finish.
