What's hot and what's not: Ibiza fashion

Written by  Stephanie Boyle

Summer is upon us and there is one word quivering across the lips of all clubbers: Ibiza.

So, what do you wear to stand out on an island filled with beautiful, fashion-conscious people? Here are my top picks:

What to wear to:

The Zoo Project
Key words: Animal print

Forget the assumption that themed dressing-up is only for Halloween, fetishists, and under 10 year olds: at the Zoo Project you’ll want to go all out. It will be hot and there will be face paint, so get involved. WARNING: this look isn’t for the fainthearted.

This jumpsuit from ASOS would be my choice. Jumpsuits are wonderfully flattering and with a simple pair of heels, a statement bracelet and a black waist belt, this would look incredible. If you need a jacket, a cropped leather would punk-up the look. If you really want to go all out, the feathered Topshop necklace would finish this look off perfectly.

A night out clubbing

If you’re planning on wearing something other than a bikini for the entire time away then here are a few great suggestions. Miniskirts and hotpants are always great clubbing staples but they’re pretty standard and here at Core Fashion we like to introduce you to something a little different.

This Silence and Noise playsuit is reminiscent of the tribal looks flaunted in the Spring/Summer Donna Karan and Burberry Prorsum collections. It makes a statement without having to make an effort.

Shoes-wise: if you have a spare £160 lying around then these Miista heels are my choice for the summer. Quite simply, I love them. If you make the (incredibly wise) choice to invest, just think, they will go with anything.

This look is brilliant (if I do say so myself) and I think that large jewellery would distract the eye. However, these earrings would match particularly well.

Alternatively, a LBD is always a safe bet. This dress from Topshop takes its influence from 1920’s glamour without going too far.

If your preferred style is feminine and classy then this dress scores top marks. Multi-layered waterfall skirts are incredibly flattering and this style will make sure you stand out from the mini-skirted crowd in all the right ways. Shimmer fabrics have featured in the Spring/Summer collections of Paco Rabanne, Marc Jacobs, Haider Ackermann, Diesel Black Gold, Prabal Gurung and Giorgio Armani. With that dastardly crew involved, how can you say no?

The too-cool afterparty

So, what to wear when you’ve managed to score an invite to the club-promoter’s/DJ’s personal after-party? (Unlikely, probably, but a girl’s got to prepare for these occasions, right?)

This dress is quite simply amazing. It would be comfortable to wear after a full night of clubbing, not to mention a full day of sunbathing, and makes an effort so you don’t have to. Team it with a pair of striking platforms with a not-too-killer heel and you’ve got yourself an outfit. Both of the pairs of wedges featured have been found in the Boutique section on the Urban Outfitters website.

A day at the beach

It shouldn’t be hard to decide on what to wear for a day soaking up the sun but after spotting this monstrosity on the ASOS website, I thought it best to share a few ideas:

(When the model in the photo doesn’t look good, let’s face it, there isn’t any hope for the rest of us. Don't do it to yourself.)

Neon brights are a current fashion trend that I fear to wear as part of a full outfit, however they can look amazing in small doses. As bikinis are the smallest item of publicly acceptable clothing I can think of, I think we might be safe experimenting a bit with them here. These pieces range in price from the (perfect) Agent Provocateur two-piece at a heart-stopping £195, down to the bright blue Urban Outfitters fringed style at £28. The Tavik bikini is particularly beautiful and in trend in feminine pastel colours. (I’ve excluded examples of one-piece swimming costumes as however much they may be in fashion right now, I don’t believe they look good on anyone, ever.)

Urban Outfitters

For covering up after a hard day of sunbathing I would highly recommend this River Island playsuit. The pattern is slightly tribal, but not too much of a statement to look out of place on a beach. The Pointer Peach pumps are wonderfully cute (your feet will thank you for wearing them after dancing all night in heels) and the ASOS tribal rucksack is practical and perfect for carrying around sun cream. What more do you need?

The hungover breakfast/lunch/dinner

Everyone knows it eventually gets to that point when the partying takes its toll and you have to shuffle to a café to buy something that isn’t alcoholic. As a fashion writer it would be almost illegal for me to say that you should abandon all hope of style in those dismal moments. However I can make it easier on you.

Here are a few simple, easy to wear items that would look wonderful no matter how terrible you feel. The ASOS t-shirt/dress and the Miss Selfridge lace dress are gorgeous, reflecting the pastel colours seen across the Christopher Kane collection, not to mention the collections of Alexander McQueen, Louis Vuitton and Jonathan Saunders. These two don’t need anything more than a pair of ballet pumps (and perhaps some sunglasses) to make you look effortlessly on trend.

If you’re a fan of maxi-dresses (which I most definitely am), then this beautiful Ecote piece mirrors the underwater style featured in this season’s Versace, Givenchy and Chanel collections. The only difference being that you don’t have to stick a starfish to yourself to get the point across (unless you want to of course).
