His biggest track to date, ‘SOS’, took the number one spot on Beatport and was featured on a plethora of compilations and radio charts across the planet in South Africa, UK, USA, Australia and beyond. Ralph’s extensive arsenal of original productions and remixes have rewarded him with huge support from many of the world’s most prominent DJs including Fedde Le Grand, Dubfire, David Guetta, Chuckie, Tiesto, Axwell, Bob Sinclar, Erick Morillo, Afrojack, Mark Knight, Pete Tong, Armin Van Buuren, Miguel Migs and many more.
We catch up with Ralph to get the lowdown from the current good guy in dance:
Tell us about your latest singles.
I’ve been releasing a bunch of techy tracks lately on Richard Dinsdale’s Tanzanite Records. I’ve also released ‘Dance’ with Futuristic Polar Bears; ‘Anybody’ on Wazzup Records and ‘Sao Paolo Shuffle’; and ‘The Roots’ and ‘Sharlie Cheen’ (with Dave Kurtis) on Hotfingers.
You’ve done some quality remixes recently, how do you get those opportunities? Do people come to you or do you chase them?
I’ve had a lot of personal contact with various artists from my previous project, The Good Guys. When I started my solo career I mostly worked with people I know and we did remix swaps. As some of my remixes got pretty good exposure on charts and playlistings, various labels and artists approached me asking if I could remix their stuff. Nowadays I have to turn down a lot of remix requests otherwise I wouldn’t have time to do any original tracks any more!
Have you ever thought about putting an album together?
I have, but it hasn’t become a project I have my focus on yet.
What would you say has been your most successful single to date?
My biggest single to date was ‘SOS’ ft. Polina Griffith. I got support from the A-list jocks around the world and reached the Top 10 on Beatport’s main charts. ‘In The Zone’ (ft. Shena) will be the official follow-up single to ‘SOS’, out soon on Tiger Records including remixes by Ian Carey, David Jones and Richard Grey. I’m very excited about it!
What can we expect from you studio-wise in 2012?
More original tracks than in 2011 including music videos, and some remixes for great singers such as Tara McDonald.
What labels have you yet to release on that you would love to be associated with?
I’m working on some productions under a new moniker, and hopefully will get attention by Hot Creations. I personally love the stuff they are doing, let’s wait, work and see!
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given and by whom?
Back in the days, both my dad and one of my sports coaches said: “You never know if a decision is going to be right or wrong in advance. The important thing is to make a decision and follow with 100% conviction!”
How many hours a day do you spend on social networks?
Not as many as on Logic.
Your tip for success in 2012 is?
Discipline is king.
Who is your idol?
For some of you it might sound cheesy but hey, it’s my Dad!
How do you approach your productions? Where do you get ideas from?
Sometimes I start with the melody in the break. Sometimes I try to just play around with drums to get the groove going. I don’t really have a specific approach.
Is there anyone you’d love to collaborate with?
Hmm… I think Beth Ditto would be great to have on one of my records!
Describe a typical day in your life?
Getting up, having a shower, eating breakfast, starting up the computer, doing music and networking, eat, chilling at the lake if it’s sunny, doing some music and networking again, checking promos or sending those out, having dinner and meeting friends, then sleeping at some point.
Do you follow what’s going on in your scene or just do what you feel is right for you?
I’m trying to follow the scene since its always evolving and bringing new and exciting things.
