1- How would you guys describe your act to anyone yet to see you play live? And tells us more about the people involved.
Jungle and drum and bass mashup with live vocals and mc'ing. Northern Scum is the brain child of Rikines who started mixing mith IAMJUNGLE after realising their passion for American Ragga Jungle and other dnb. She was also the link to Marf who is the singer in La La and Boo Ya and Congo Natty Live. Joffman has been around the Leeds scene for many years and linked up to create the raw, live sound Northern Scum was looking for.
2-Jungle Jam residents? tell us more about Jungle Jam and the history of the night. Only ever heard great things about JJ so we are interested to hear your take on it and plans for the future along with any great moments from the past.
Jungle Jam was started by I AM JUNGLE and a group of junglists back in 2005 at Burley Liberal Club in Leeds. They were disappointed by the lack of jungle in the Leeds music scene and wanted to bring back the amen break. After shows at Leeds West Indian Centre and Beaverworks Jungle Jam finally found a home at Mint Club and Mint Warehouse.
It's an absolutely banging night with a loyal, die hard junglist following who come to skank all night and party till the early morning each and every time. It's been a great year at Mint, allowing us to dj alongside some of the biggest names in the industry including Goldie, Congo Natty, Dillinja and Benny Page. Watching Goldie tear down Mint Warehouse playing a 2hour history of Metalheadz set for the Jungle Jam 7th Birthday has to be the highlight so far! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_aBSszUoNVE
3-What musical plans do NS have for the rest of this year and next? and where can we see the act on stage next?
We are currently working on our first EP which we want to get out before Christmas. Outlook festival is the next date with the Jungle Jam boat party and then a set on the beach. After that we've got Mint Festival and then Jungle Jam dates including Valve Soundsystem on the 19th October!
4-For any new acts just starting out and wanting to get more exposure, what advice could you pass on?
Work hard, network and get your mixes and tunes all over the internet!
5-What's your thoughts on the evolution of the D&B scene? and how can you see it moving forward over the next few years?
For me (IAMJUNGLE) it seemed to get a bit stale a few years ago and thats when I came across the Ragga Jungle scene in America but over the last couple of years the UK has come back to true form producing some great tracks from Serum, Amoss, Bladerunner, Aries, Serial Killaz and Jubei to name a few. Its a really exciting time for dnb music and think it's going to continue along two distinct roads, the new jungle sound and also the deep rolling dnb both of which we mix up in Northern Scum.
6-If NS could play any gig in the world where and what would it be? and why?
Playing in Japan would be pretty awesome. They love the UK scene and have some amazing clubs.
7-If you could support any act/DJ in the world who would it be? and why?
I think that would have to be Prodigy. They are kings of dance music and it would be great to play a festival with them!
8-If one track/piece of music could some up your sound, what would it be?
General Malice – This is Why I'm Hot
9-And finally if NS did not play banging Jungle/D&B,what would be the next music genre weapon of choice?
Very tough question as we're all into lots of different things but I think it would be some kind of bass music.
