Wav Kid Talks: Sabotaging David Guetta, Crap Singing & New Shit EP

Written by

We speak to Wav Kid about who floats his boat, a new night he's got in Leeds and his New Shit EP - no really, that's what it's called! He's also done an EXCLUSIVE mini mix for Core readers - wanna hear it? Carry on!

Hi, thanks for taking time out to speak to Core….

No worries at all, always up for a chat :-)

Can you just introduce yourself, where you're from and what you do?

Well, I'm Wav Kid and I'm a 25 producer/DJ from Leeds and its got to the point know where literally I'm not doing anything other than sat making beats, all the time, everyday. I don't think winter could of come any sooner for me because at least now I can use the cold as an excuse to stay glued to my computer!

What genres influence your music and style?

I listen to all sorts of stuff and to be honest I've just been listening to loads of Uk hip hop for the last 2 months, it cracks me up how much breeze people really can chat, but as far as my productions go I used to make a lot of dubstep, so I think I take a lot of influence from that but I'm a massive fan of the Uk funky stuff that's about and I can't get enough of daft 808 Grime Instrumentals. I try to take elements from everything but I'm really only thinking about tunes that are going to go off on a dance floor now, so just a lot of bass and a lot of shuffle hats!

Who's floating your boat in the scene at the moment?

I'm a massive fan of Roska, Lil Silva & Redlight, as obvious choices they are but I just love how simple they keep their tracks, while still having a tonne of power behind em. Other than that, I've got a lot of time Lenkemz & Colossus, even though they are both completely different, they're both so versatile, it's like whenever they send me a tune, I never even know what style it's going to be until I've played it. I really appreciate people that have the ability to go between genres like it's nothing.

Where do you see yourself in 6 and 12 months time?

Where I'd like to see myself and where I actually see myself  are very different hahaha!! Ideally, I'd like to be touring the world smashing up clubs and trying to sabotage David Guetta at all of our shared bookings but I reckon I'll probably just be sat here with a shed load more beats under my belt. I've been getting a lot of interest from my new stuff so hopefully I'll be able to go up and down the country a bit and play some tunes, who knows what the future holds ;-) I'll be playing part in hosting a new night that's going to be launching in Leeds over the next few months too so keep your eyes peeled for that!

What are your main ambitions?

I'd really like to work on a full album with guest vocalists and the lot. I've been thinking about it for so long and have just never done it but I'd love that - if I just had one solid album with different vocalists, some colabs and a quality cover, I'd be a very happy man. I should probably just start doing it but good vocalists are so hard to come by. I'd love to be able to sing too, that would make life a lot easier but I can't hold a note for toffee!

You've got a new EP out - tell us more, how did it come about?

The New Shit EP is my gift to anyone who's supported me from day one, those that have always listened to my tunes even when they were rubbish, haha! I just hope the everyone enjoys the tracks as much as I do, a lot changed in my life during the process of that EP and if I'm honest I'm chuffed with how it's turned out.
