The Brazilian pre-Easter Carnaval is an institution, the likes of which are found nowhere else in the world. The best known event is in Rio, with samba schools, blocos (costumed groups who are dressed according to certain themes) and dancers. The spirit of Carnaval has been transferred to London, with seven whole nights of music and mayhem. A little corner of Brazil in the UK.
As well as bands and DJs, you can expect free dance lessons in preparation for the masked ball which takes place on the Saturday. The event is officially launched with the Ritmos da Cidade street parade around Covent Garden on Friday 17th. The parade will culminate in a 25-strong team of dancers taking to the stage, whilst DJs drop tunes until 4am.
After the masked ball, which is the main draw for Brazilian ex-pats, the week continues with Sunday’s buffet and Pagode anthems, which are followed by dance lessons and yet more DJs until the early hours. Monday sees a chance to discover the carnival spirit of old with the Carnaval Carioca. The closing party takes place on Tuesday 21st, but for those with a thirst for even more action, there is a hangover samba party on the 22nd.
The whole thing sounds completely amazing, and you can find out more at www.guanabara.co.uk or by calling 02072428600. The whole event is centred around Parker Street, WC2B 5PW, and is open from 5pm-2.30, with late nights until 4am Friday 17th-Sunday 19th. There is even a half-price happy hour from 5pm-7am Monday to Saturday.
Get yourselves down there for a real slice of the sun in London.
