You've Got Talent Season 1: Hard Dance WINNER!

Written by

Here are the results of our hard dance producer/DJ You've Got Talent search. We’re taking each category in turn and announcing the winners over the next week or so. Finally we’ll choose an overall winner. However each winner from each category will be interviewed for the main magazine. This time, it's Mark EG as the judge. Enjoy!

Hi guys. Really enjoyed doing this category. Took me a while (sorry life is insane!!!) but we're here now haha. Hard dance is a massive variety of styles, so I tried to judge everything by production/DJ quality, not necessarily the music I loved. Hope you appreciate my comments ;) (MARK EG)

HARDSTYLE/HARD TRANCE/HARD HOUSE PRODUCER

LeftOuterJoin - Escape Velocity

http://soundcloud.com/leftouterjoin/escape-velocity

Some of the drums are too dry here. For example, the hit-hats would really have benefitted from delay. The production sounds a little dated imho.  6/10

KRM - Dark By Design - Blackout (KRM REMIX)

http://soundcloud.com/absolution-digital/krm-dark-by-design-blackout

Absolute chaos! There’s a lot going on here, I really like it! This guy has his own style. This will sound good in a dark UK rave club. Can’t wait to hear more. 8/10

WINNER!

Unit 13 - Amber D - Rush On Me (Unit 13 Remix)

http://soundcloud.com/unit13official/amber-d-rush-on-me-unit-13

Modern and clean production with total confidence in the melody placing. Everything is ‘upfront’ in the mix, it all sounds polished. 9/10

Unit 13 Feat Jo Kasner - Live Your Life

http://soundcloud.com/unit13official/unit-13-live-your-life

Again, tight production from Unit 13. These guys will definitely go far! 8/10

Kemikal Konjestion - Beginning Of Time

http://soundcloud.com/djkemikalkonjestion/beginning-of-time-kemikal1

This is a great underground sounding track, however there’s a bass conflict problem happening here – perhaps EQ or the fact it needs making more mono in the bottom end. The bass line change after the break isn’t working and sounds a little ‘out of pitch’. 7/10

Dark Electric - Catnip

http://soundcloud.com/dark-electric/dark-electric-catnip-electric

Good idea but a lot of the main sounds are very ‘thin’, almost like too much bottom end has been taken off or there’s too much reverb on stuff. In the end, it all becomes quite ‘mushy’ and reverberated. 6/10

Futurekix - Corporate Shambles

http://soundcloud.com/gravit8/corporate-shambles-futurekix-1

A few of the melodies feel like they’ve got too much portamento and the production feels a little dated. Good try though! 6/10

Gem Stone - Occam's Razor

http://soundcloud.com/gem-stone/gem-stone-occams-razor-sample

The kick on this needs bringing forward to give it more punch and bring it up to modern day standards. 6/10

HolyGhost UK – Jack Rabbit

http://soundcloud.com/djholyghost/jack-rabbit-by-holyghost-uk

Again very old sounding production and there needs to be more happening - or at least shinning through in the mix, to give more movement 6/10

DeannReid - Eternity (Original Mix)

http://soundcloud.com/deannreid/deannreid-eternity-original

Nice idea, clever melodies, but the whole bottom end needs work to give more power. The drum loop is in danger of cluttering the mix too much. 7/10

HARDSTYLE/HARD TRANCE/HARD HOUSE DJ

MooneY - Trance Into Hard Trance

http://soundcloud.com/twisted-nrg/mooney-trance-into-hard-trance

Some of the track transitions could do with a little work. Work on the pitches. A decent progression though! 6/10

DJ Benzo – Hard Dance Mash Up!

http://soundcloud.com/bencarson/sweet-game-over

There’s some good beat matching and programming on this one, it’s super confident all the way through and has a lot of character. 8/10

ChanceDJ - Take a Chance Mix

http://soundcloud.com/djchance/takeachance

There are pitch issues here, with some tracks sounding out of key when they come into the mix and many of the sounds conflicting. A good variety of music though. 6/10

DJ Syanide - Ricin Vol.1

http://soundcloud.com/djsyanide/sets/ricin-vol-1

Really cool old school track selection. However, the mixes here need to be tighter to compete in the modern world! 6/10

DJ Atom D 'Shut Up And Bounce 6'

http://soundcloud.com/dj-atom-de-2011/dj-atom-de-shut-up-and-bounce

Again, there are a lot of musical conflicts going on here. Atom D can definitely beat match but when certain melodies come in, they sound kinda wrong! 6/10

HolyGhost UK - Yang

http://soundcloud.com/djholyghost/yang-mixed-by-holyghost-uk

Really have to give HolyGhost UK props for trying to put so many different genres in the mix. Not sure it’s works though, especially putting newer sounding production next to old stuff. 6/10

DJ Stoxy - Chase The Bass

http://soundcloud.com/stoxy1/chase-the-bass

Some of the cross fading doesn’t work here, especially when the main melodies are playing. Work on making things gel better. 6/10

Samphetamin & Kingo - We Are The Illusion

http://soundcloud.com/samphetamin-2/samphetamin-kingo-we-are-the

Really good track selection, some good transitions. These guys have potential but needs a little more practice on the programming. 7/10

WINNER!

FOID - Myopia

http://soundcloud.com/foid/myopia

This mix is badly recorded and lets it down massively. Everyone needs to realize the importance of this! It’s a shame because you can tell this girl really can mix. And that’s why she’s won! Most of the tracks fit well together and there’s real talent here. Not the kinda thing I'd play but well done FOID! 9/10

Mr Forth - The Rush

http://www.soundcloud.com/mr-forth/the-rush

The real strong point on this mix is the tracks. They’re not your typical hard dance tracks and you’ve got to admire the fact that something different is being done. However, just a little bit more work on the ‘order’ and levels is needed as there are conflicts and volume issues going on. Really inspired by this guy. 8/10
