You've Got Talent Season 1: Techno WINNER!

Written by

Here are the results of our techno producer/DJ You've Got Talent search with Ben Long from the infamous Space DJz as the superstar guest judge for the DJ section here. We’re taking each category in turn and announcing the winners over the next week or so. Finally we’ll choose an overall winner. However each winner from each category will be interviewed for the main magazine. Enjoy!

MOST TALENTED TECHNO PRODUCER - JUDGES COMMENTS:

MashUp - SkullFuck (Original Mix)

http://soundcloud.com/mashup-2/mashup-skullfuck-original-mix

A good track idea but we feel it’s missing stand out percussion to drive the track along. Sure there’s a hi hat or two in there but it’s blended in with the sounds too much. Same with the off beat snare. Back off a bit on the reverbs and you might start to see things jump out of the mix and hit you more. 7/10

Leon Immense - Analyze The Soundflow (Acid Techno)

http://soundcloud.com/leon-immense/analyzethesoundflow

The production on this one sounds a bit too ‘old’ in our opinion with a rather dead kick and the same looped hi-hats throughout. Perhaps in the mid-90’s this might have appeared on some obscure German acid label but we’re now nearly twenty years on and production needs to be much more modern. The main 303 line is programmed well though! 5/10

Jamie C - Gods Mistake (Dorset Acid Techno)

http://soundcloud.com/wonkyfunk303/gods-mistake-final/s-u6uDN

Good main 303 sound but the mix here needs attention. The ride is too loud and could do with some kind of reverb. The bassline also conflicts with the sub frequencies of the kick, making the kick flap around more than it should. 6/10

Myler - Various Cruelties

http://soundcloud.com/myler/myler-various-cruelties

For what it is, this is a pretty well produced track. It’s not an A-side track but would probably fit together with similar sounding tracks on an album better than on its own. This is well EQ’d with plenty of changes to keep things interesting. 8/10

Kita - OC3 (Acid Techno)

http://soundcloud.com/kita-oc3/oc-3-fucking-freedom

Similar to Leon’s track this is sounding old. The kick is far to knocked back to be playable these days. The elements are all there to keep interest so we’d advise another attempt at the mixdown - a suggestion would be to start with the kick in your face, then bring up each element gradually. Hope this helps! 6/10

Tim Müllr - Brain Screwed Preview

http://soundcloud.com/timmueller1/tim-m-ller-brain-screwed

We can see the ‘idea’ in this one, but the mix could do with work. It feels like you’re surrounded by too much reverb, perhaps take some of it back and make certain elements cleaner. Although many of the best tracks in techno are dark and dirty, the elements in them are surprisingly clean. It’s a good start though! 7/10

Jamie-C - Chemical Generation

http://soundcloud.com/wonkyfunk303/chemical-generation-final

This is a better idea than Jamie’s last track but the main issue here is the percussion. Everything is too dry. Just a touch of send reverb on things like the clap, ride and hat loop would glue it all together much better. 6/10

WINNER!

The Subdermic - Slicks 50

http://soundcloud.com/subdermic/the-subdermic-slicks-50-subdermic-13

The Subdermic has surpassed himself here. The track is cleverly written, awash with weird and wonderful sounds that complement each other perfectly. The snare/hat percussion works like a dream and nothing is predicable from the very off. It doesn’t get much darker than this. We LOVE the kick drum! 10/10

Jamie C

This suffers from similar issues to Jamie’s other tracks above. There’s no denying Jamie has talent but sometimes things just get messy and old sounding. 6/10

Mandidextrous – Money Talks Mandidextrous

TRACK NOT AVAILABLE ON SOUNDCLOUD ANYMORE SO CANNOT COMMENT.

MOST TALENTED TECHNO DJ - JUDGES COMMENTS:

Matt Milano

http://soundcloud.com/matt-milano/matt-milano-birthday-bang-set

Some nice trax here. The mix was a bit up and down and all around for my liking. I think the end should have been the start and the start the end - would have built up a lot nicer 7/10

Soofisticated - Fucking Niet Normaal! (Techno Mix)

http://soundcloud.com/soofisticated/soofisticated-fucking-niet

Nice mix all round. Good track selection and goes on a good musical journey. Some nice FX here and there - not too much just enough 7/10

Florian Munkt – Musiktheater Bad

http://soundcloud.com/florian-munkt/12-05-2012-musiktheater-bad

This is a very nice mix. Good flow and track selection. Kicks right off at the end! 8/10

WINNER!

Soofisticated - December 2011 Techno

http://soundcloud.com/soofisticated/soofisticated-december-2011

Great mix indeed! A good blend of trax. Nice FX and tells a story. Takes the listener on a journey of sound. This is the winner for me 10/10

LukWar - Tekk 05-12

http://soundcloud.com/lukwar/tekk-05-12

Not my cup of tea at all. Too fast, too hard and too noisy 4/10

Florian Munkt – 03-03-Bassment

Some nice tax here but there is no flow to the mix. Its a bit like having sex with no foreplay. It should ebb and flow a bit more. 6/10

http://soundcloud.com/florian-munkt/03-03-bassment-bauhaus

Klang_Therapie Live aka MoNo_Freak & Voodoo_Kind

http://soundcloud.com/klang_therapie/klang_therapie-live

This mix is confused and lacks structure imo. Good trax but not put together well. 6/10

DJ Filthmonger – Threeothree

http://soundcloud.com/djfilthmonger/threeothree

Not the best judge of this mix because I just don't like the sound and track selection. It sounds very old fashioned to me and it’s just not my cup of tea

Tim Müller@Banging Techno Sets

http://soundcloud.com/timmueller1/tim-m-ller-banging-techno-sets

Nice intro. Nice use of FX. Good flow in the mix 8/10

DJ Filthmonger - Techno Mix

http://soundcloud.com/djfilthmonger/technomix

Funky intro. Great track selection - a nice mix of modern and classic trax for sure. Filthmonger has good taste in music and rides the mix well, starting easy and working up the atmosphere. A few mistakes here and there but that’s vinyl for you! 8/10

FINAL WINNERS!
