Rush Records: review

Written by  Olivia Wilson

Rush Records: a refreshing new balance between old school booming basslines and contemporary tweaked-to-perfection mixes of liquid and jungle drum and bass.

Intertwining luscious chords with an element of liquid jazz, Rush have well and truly smashed it with their new EP. The unique vocals are provided by DnBethh, an up-and-coming vocalist in the scene: her voice echoes with a range of beautiful tones and harmonies that you can keep your eyes closed to. Drift away to a sandy white beach somewhere with this musically gifted sensation.

Rush 001 to 004 all hold an eclectic mix of original beats, bringing the old and the new together and adding a touch of Rush in all sub-genres of drum and bass. They are easy listening tracks, as well as soulful, with warm and natural sounds.

Rush001 was released on June 4th 2012. Check out Colossus & DnBethh, Dreamwalk: carefully placed warm synth chords and trumpets shaped into a dnb lullaby with a ‘rush your head off’ arms-raised dance floor appeal. The B-side, 'You're My Whole World’, resonates around the room with the soulful male vocals and that sexy winding bassline, perfect for the hip grinders. Don't think I haven't seen you on Wednesday’s at Swerve!

Rush 002 is out on July 2nd 2012 and features Gelosia and is one of my favourites out of them all. The piano and the vocal intro leaves you deep in thought before you are hit with a raw grizzly bass, adding elements of hardcore drums and the old Ram style boom touching in at parts. It’s certainly an extremely fun track to mix. I really like how these guys have kept their sound original and their EP is diverse to an extremely high quality standard. They like to use a lot of sweeps alongside the piano, and the piano is my instrument of choice.

Rush 003: The Leeds-based duo shocked me again with these two tracks as they have really taken the 'think outside the box' approach. Judging by all of these masterpieces, they are building a trademark warm sound but with enough bass to keep you locked in. ‘Treex, Who Are They' and 'Fairbank, Angels' roll coolly with just the right amount of minimal elements added to a full background.

Rush 004, The Liquid Salvation EP: My favourite of the Liquid Salvation is ‘Broken In Time’. I have a classical music background and it reminds me of the sad but alluring charm certain classical pieces hold. Honestly, I usually listen to tear-out 'hit the floor with your face' dnb and I've never been a huge fan of rollers, but actually this has got me inspired enough to go and put a liquid set together. The tracks in this EP include 'Bad Monday', 'Angelic Destruction' and 'Romantic Distortion'. You can tell by the names of the tracks how the EP is going to taste and it does what it says on the tin quite honestly!

We will be seeing a lot more from Rush Records, and if that’s not enough to get you salivating here’s a cheeky mix from Flex of Rush Recs: http://dnbshare.com/download/Rush_Records_Promo_Mix.mp3.html
