Drum and Bass Reviews - July 2012

Culture Shock – I Remember/Troglodyte – RAM

Ram come forth with the goodies again and again. This two-tracker from  Culture Shock has all the atmospheric swirls you’d expect, but the beautiful thing about 'I Remember' is that the drums sit way back in the mix allowing you to really float on those gentle yet progressive synth lines. Def one for the main arena, but excellently produced with just a hint of Georgio Moroder thrown in about two thirds of the way through. I thought the flip 'Troglodyte' was named after my missus at first, but no, this one is far darker than that! It burbles in a pretty intense manner. Oh hang on, it is about my missus after all. Jokes! This choon is badd!

Future Jungle Reviews – June 2012

100Me v Soul Sinners – Dropship – Top Drawer Digital

TTD are simply unstoppable at the moment. The last 12 months has seen the Midlands based label go from strength to strength, and this latest offering from 100Me v Soul Sinners shows why. With three mixes on the Future Jungle tip and one slightly less aggro techno mix from Audiojackerz, this is yet another value for money release. The original mix sure packs a punch, with a futuristic, jazz tinged minor chord run that whiles it way through the track’s core, this sitting snugly under lots of obscure noises and samples, with some vocal snatches from what I think is one of the Alien movies? Mix of the match award however goes to Sanxion, who I can tell you nothing about apart from this fella has the essence of Future Jungle running through his veins. The mix he has presented here showcases his pure understanding of what FJ is all about. Cool as it gets.

Drum and Bass Reviews - April 2012

Terminal State – Robot State EP (Future Thinking)

Brand new from the Future Thinking camp comes this four-track EP of dark, brooding drum and bass by Jersey-based Terminal State. Both heavy and techy at the same time, all four of these quite individual tracks are perfect 4am material.  Opening track ‘Future of Mankind’ is just killer, with a punishing kick drum interlaced with twisted Amen snippets and some evil, twisted bass stabs, this is pretty scary shit! The three other tracks, ‘In the Evening’, ‘Morphing Shadows’ and ‘Unwritten Law’, are all also excellent tracks. Well worth a listen. Release date June 4th.

Drum & Bass Reviews - March 2011

Hello world, I'm Upakut, a DJ on www.koollondon.com. I do a show every Saturday morning from 11am - 1pm. The way I approach DJing is not as a producer but as a fan. I think it's important to like the music you hear, so I play what I like to hear. Ya hear?!

Luckily there are a lot of people who agree! One thing I think is important is diversity, so for my first round of reviews I am going to review my favourite five released tunes of the moment - not any particular style, just across the board of drum and bass showcasing the best of each.
